Wild West Shoot Out

Fermoy Camera Club recently returned from their annual trip. This year twenty one members took in some of the highlights of the midlands as well as exploring the wilds of Mayo. The group gathered early on the Thursday morning to form a convoy of cars to head to the first stop which was Tullamore. Unfortunately by the time we reached the roundabout at Moorepark the convoy was already fragmented! Undaunted each car made the journey to Tullamore where the group was once again reunited. Here the group mellowed out with a tour of the Tullamore Dew Distillery. This proved very popular with everyone bar the drivers who were not able to partake in the whiskey sampling.

After lunch it was onto Clonmacnoise for a guided tour of this ancient monastic site, on the banks of the mighty Shannon River. The weather was quite broken but we were quite lucky as it remained mostly dry while we toured the settlement. Having completed this tour it was once again back to the cars for the final drive to our accommodation for the weekend, which was in Westport. This time there was no pretence of forming a convoy and it was every car for themselves.

Friday morning we arose to pull back the curtains to gaze out at the torrential rain! Undaunted we struck off after breakfast ,with windscreen wipers on full, we headed for Achill Island. As we arrived on the island the rain had eased to a light downpour. However as we pulled onto our first beach the clouds broke up and the sun came blazing out. We were in our element, at least for twenty minutes when the clouds closed up and the rain returned. The day continued like that with the weather changing as quickly as a flip of a coin. This made for amazing light which  meant everyone got some stunning photos.

Saturday morning was dry but overcast as we headed out to meet Westport based photographer Tom Ramwell. Tom had agreed to take us on a tour of his favourite locations, this proved to be a spectacular tour and believe it or not the convoy of cars remained together throughout the day.

Sunday morning we started the journey southwards for our final official tour of the weekend. This was in the picturesque village of Cong where we gathered, like proper tourists with cameras hanging round our necks, for "The Quiet Man” Tour. Having finished the tour everyone was in agreement that we will all have to rewatch the film.

Before leaving Cong we said our goodbyes as each car had its own route and stops planned for the journey home. While the weather may not always have been the best, it is Ireland after all!, everyone was in total agreement that all the locations visited were spectacular and that the company, craic and “Fun with Photography” will remain with everyone for many years to come.
